A new pipeline was needed to replace a failing cast iron watermain laid during World War 2, which traverses some of the most rugged topography and dense bush imaginable. The commercial discovery of natural gas in the Marcellus shale beneath Washington County in 2004 has set off the biggest Pennsylvania land rush in the 150 years since Col. Edwin Drake drilled the world's first oil well in Venango County. Marcellus is a rock formation that runs a mile underground from New York through Pennsylvania and on south to Tennessee. Geologists believe the rock could contain 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas – 10 times more than all of the gas Appalachia has released since Drake's find. The bore into the Albemarle Sound was part of the Currituck County Mainland Water Treatment Plant Reverse Osmosis Expansion project. The concentrate water (or reject water) from the reverse osmosis process is brackish and must be discharged into a receiving water of similar quality. The County was forced to discharge the concentrate water at the mouth of the North River and Albemarle Sound, 21 miles away from the plant site, and approximately 1,800 ft. off shore where flow was high enough to result in complete mixing. more ...
